Hello! My name is Flora and I am a 15 year old runner. I have competed at district and national level and have represented my country. This blog is about my story and I hope it inspires you to never give up.
I first joined an athletics club around June 2017, when I was 13. This is a lot later than most other girls in my age group and it has meant that I have had to work harder to catch up with all the girls who have been running longer than me. In May 2018 after around 6 months of proper endurance training I competed in the Scottish East District Championships, I was just beginning to love track training and racing so I was very excited to race my first track championship race, I knew that it was going to be a tough race and I wasn’t going to finish anywhere near the front but that didn’t stop my drive or determination to do my best. I ran a breakthrough race that day, I got a massive PB and to my surprise I finished 4th! I was so happy with my performance but it was slightly bittersweet, I’d gotten a taste of what it was like to be close to a medal, I’d realised that maybe if I worked hard enough, I could compete with the girls who had years of running experience. That race left me so hungry for more. I began to work harder in training, regular easy runs were included into my training schedule and a weekly long run was introduced. Leading up to winter 2018/19 I was working harder and doing more than I’d ever done before, but, I wasn’t getting the races I wanted, I wasn’t performing to my potential. It felt unfair, I was putting the work in but not getting the results I wanted, I was continually having bad races and my confidence was dropping but I knew that if I kept my drive and kept putting in the work then my time would come. Throughout all the bad races I never missed a training session and I gave every session 100% effort because I knew I couldn’t give up.
Leading up to the 2019 East District Championships I had stepped up an age category, this meant that the competition would be harder so going into the race, I had no expectations but somehow, I managed to win. I couldn’t believe it, I was so happy all my training had paid off and I was rewarded with a gold medal.
I hope that my story inspires you to keep going throughout the hard times, bad days are normal and sometimes there is no explanation, they’re just part of sport and everybody has to deal with them. The most important thing to do through the hard times is to keep putting the work in and never let your determination fade. Never give up and you will achieve your dreams :)
